There are actually three types of ?townhouse? referred to in Boston: a townhouse, a row house and a brownstone.
What?s the difference? According to Kevin Murphy, who like me is a Boston native, a townhouse is an attached or detached property built close to the street and designed to look like all the other houses in the street. A row house is also an urban property, built in a similar style to those around it, but it could be further back from the road and may have a garden. A brownstone can be either of the above but would be covered in brown sandstone. All three types of building are common among examples of Boston Ma. real estate, and may or may not feature bay windows.
